Pioneer Navi installed into a TJ

Installing a 2 Din head unit in a 1.5 Din dashboard

How about we install a Pioneer AVIC-F900bt into the TJ. Problem is, the 97-06 TJ's have a 1.5 din...that means the 2 din Pioneer will be too tall to fit in the dash.

HomeDepotFenders-25Most of us install bigger and wider tires on our vehicles.  As cool as this looks, after a while you may get annoyed with the rain, mud, snow, and rocks that fly up and hit your windshield or side windows.  In this case, I now have a 10 month old who resides in the backseat of our families TJ.  If the doors and top are off, he stand to get pretty wet, muddy, or injured by flying debris.

I would love nothing more than to order some tube fenders with flares all the way around the thing, but the lack of extra funds keeps me from doing so for now.  I did a lot of research on the Internet for alternatives.  Some interesting stuff came up, not all of it impressed me all that much.  Especially the old cut up tire thing and the garden trim you can buy at the Hardware Store.  A possible option is this company-Pacer Flexy Flares.  Available online everywhere, but here is a link to what Quadratec has.  A cheap alternative but not the look I wanted to try and keep.  My Jeep's fenders were subjected to the Sawzall many years ago, so now they have that "flat-fender" look in the front.  I then proceeded to trim the plastic edges of the factory fenders off to make it look flat also.  It's easier to see in the pictures.

So, as I'm walking through my local Big Box Hardware Store (name your poison) , I came across strips and rolls of vinyl coving that is normally used for flooring.  It has the perfect shape for this application and it sure looks better than the plastic garden/lawn trim stuff, plus it's cheaper!

There are two ways to buy it around here...50ft rolls for about $35 and 48" sections for about $3-4 each.

Total Cost...Approx $45!  This includes Vinyl Cove, Rivets, Rivet Washers, and Spray on Bed Liner

Starting with the stock fender flare, which in my case has the edge that curves down trimmed off.  This Mod could potentially work for bare fenders on a Jeep and probably any other application with a little imagination.

Start by clamping (in this case, some welders clamps) the Vinyl Cove to your fenders and using a tape measure, make sure that it has a consistent overhang.

My overhang was approx. 5 1/4 inches total

Using a 3/8 inch drill bit, drill holes through your fenders and the coving.  You can start at either end of the fender

Using a pop-rivet gun, squeeze a rivet in the hole you just drilled.

I used 5mm dia X 12mm grip area rivets with matching 5mm rivet washers.

Continue down the fender

Drill a hole....use a pop rivet and washer...move the clamps down...repeat

I spaced my rivets 3 inches apart all the way down

After doing all four, I sprayed them with a can of Bed Liner.  They turned out pretty nice.
